A brand new Shari Low book is always something to celebrate! This one is like opening an early Christmas gift in August, as we return to the Scottish village of Weirbridge in early December. There’s already an early, heavy snowfall and as the day begins and we meet up with old and new friends, nobody can anticipate how much things will change in just … One Snowy Day.
Blurb:
On a cold winter’s day, a storm is brewing in the village of Weirbridge …
Georgie Dern has the chance to swap her empty nest for the job of a lifetime in Los Angeles. Can she chase her dream if it means letting down the woman who has given her the world?
Jessie McLean should be counting down the hours until she jets off to spend her retirement years in the sun. But when a devastating betrayal resurfaces, she has to choose between a fresh start and staying behind to settle old scores.
Alyssa Canavan has spent years building the business she adores. Now a legal letter has threatened her home and livelihood, but how does she fight a family that doesn’t give a damn?
Lachlan Morden is forced to return to Scotland to face the people who almost destroyed him. Will coming home reopen old wounds, or will a memory from the past lead him to the perfect revenge?
One snowy day, four lives, but who will have a bright new future when the snow is gone?
My Review:
I’m honestly not sure how Shari Low does it, and I’d love a sneak peak into her creative process! Is it all crazy post-it notes all over the place, while she madly tries to connect all her dots? Or is it an orderly technique where everything is filed neatly and systematically so that everyone is kept in the right place, at the right time, with the right people? Because there are a lot of people that need connecting … in a lot of different places … all at different times!! And she manages it with incredible, magical finesse, every single time!
In One Snowy Day, we once again meet Jessie, her daughter Georgia, and Alyssa who owns the coffee shop across the street from their hair salon. There are also regular mentions of Moira Chiles and her son, the now famous actor Ollie Chiles, who has opened a local Drama Academy. We meet Lachlan Morden too, and I have a feeling this isn’t the last we’ll be seeing of him (at least I hope not!). Lachlan comes with an entire back story of his own, filled with pain and hurt.
The day starts with Jessie preparing to take her leave of her comfortable life in Weirbridge – retiring from her hair salon, and leaving it in the capable hands of her daughter Georgie. And all because she and hubby Stan are off to sunny Tenerife. Isn’t that the dream? Hmmmm … she’s not so sure any more. There might be sun there, but no friends to have a laugh with, no favourite coffee shop across the street with familiar faces at every table, no familiarity at all, when you come to think of it! What will she do all day while Stan is off playing golf?
Georgie knows that her mother has built up her business for all these years so that she can take over one day. But why has a dream job offer in Hollywood arrived at just the wrong time? And Alyssa is preparing Jessie’s farewell party – Weirbridge’s party of the year – when a bombshell lands in her lap, meaning that she could be about to lose everything she’s worked so hard for, including her home! Why is life like this?
Shari Low masterfully weaves it all together and it’s a page-turner that will keep you reading late into the night. She writes with warmth, with heart and with such empathy and insight into the human need for connection and understanding. Reading one of her books is so rewarding, and I think this has been one of my favourites!
