Any book lover will relate to that little secret voice in their head (and sometimes their heart), telling them that they wish their favourite characters would magically come to life and materialize out of the pages from which they originated. Whether it’s the leading man, or just a wonderful character who you think you’d love to sit and chat to for hours and who could become your closest confidante.
Stella is stuck … back in the small town she grew up in, even back in her old home, in her childhood bedroom. In a bid to move on with her life, she decides to burn her old journal, and that’s when things get interesting because although Stella has always had the strange ability to ‘see’ words, this now becomes an inexplicably all-encompassing ability that starts to overtake her life and lead her into a realm she never dreamt existed. Because along with seeing the words that she’s always seen, she also starts to see what seem to be the fictional characters in the many books on the shelves in the library where she works as an assistant!
This is a warm, whimsical and emotionally rich novel that blends magical realism with themes of self-discovery, legacy and the power of storytelling. Stella is a relatable, likeable main character who is trying to recover from heartbreak. Starting off as someone who is unsure of herself and lacking in self-confidence, we watch her gain back some of her own self-worth as she becomes more hopeful and more positive in her ability to bring value back, not only into her own life but also into the lives of others.
This is a must-read for anyone who claims to be a lover of books. There’s hidden magic, and ultimately the biggest message of all: the reminder that storytelling transforms and connects us all.
