This is such a light, enjoyable book! It’s the perfect book to escape into if you want some escapism from all that’s going on around us in the world today. In fact … everyone needs this book right now!
Lottie Wentworth has had a rotten year – she promised her best friend she would say ‘yes’ to everything and it got her precisely nowhere, except on a one-way-train to unhappiness! She can’t wait for the new year to arrive because she’s decided that this is her year – her year of saying no to the things that she doesn’t want to do! No more doing everything to please everyone else.
The first thing she does is get herself a dog to keep her company – best idea ever! So now she has adorable Humphrey by her side. And she proceeds to continue with her life as a virtual PA (usually in her PJ’s – clever girl) having regular Skype convo’s with her best friend Seb. And that’s where it gets interesting.
Lottie and Seb share everything in these online chats and it’s obvious to everyone (well, to us readers) that there’s more than just friendship here. It’s such fun to read their ‘back-and-forth’ and even a bit cringeworthy at times! But that’s what’s so enjoyable about it. It does start reaching a point when you want to shout the obvious from the rooftops.
Morrey’s characters are likeable and real. It’s not all sunshine and rainbows. Lottie and Seb have both got their baggage, and their reasons for not just diving headlong into a relationship, so as much as we’d love to see them get it together (well, then there wouldn’t really be much of a book, would there?), they need to get past their issues, which are explained over time. The other clever thing is that although the book’s title might sound like it could be a bit negative, it’s actually a message telling us that we’re allowed to have the strength and the power to take control of our lives and say no to the things we don’t want to do, and what we no longer need or want in our lives. Get rid of what’s dragging us down in order to refresh and renew ourselves and move on! Lottie makes the right decisions for herself and creates the life that she wants, and luck us … we get to go along for the ride!
This is a thoroughly enjoyable 4-star read! Thank you to Rachel’s Random Resources and Boldwood Books for inviting me on the blog tour. Take a look at what other bloggers have said about My Year of Saying No …
