The Corrigan family of Ballycove own the wool mills and have done for many years. But the time is coming for the family matriarch Miranda to decide who will take over the mills when she is no longer running them. Faith Hogan has managed to weave her entire story around the mills in such a way that they become the heart and soul of this book. They take on a life of their own and are almost their own character – the mills are very much the vibrant centre of life in Ballycove both from a professional and communal perspective. The descriptions of life in a small Irish town are so vivid that readers can easily imagine themselves right there in the centre of it all.
The characters are all well portrayed, and described in-depth. The author has a gift for writing about the complexities and absurdities that come with being part of an influential family in a small town, where there are always expectations whether you care for them or not. You can leave, thinking that you can escape the family bonds that hold you to a place, but when circumstances land you back there and you’ve come full circle, you finally understand what home and family is all about.
Switching between past and present, you get to know about Miranda’s life growing up in Ballycove, and what has led her up to her current position in the town, making the decisions she needs to make that much more convoluted. Seeing her past leading up to where she is now just adds to the readers’ understanding of a multifaceted woman who knows that her decisions aren’t only ones that affect her and her own desires, but also all of those who depend on her to put food on their tables and rooves over their family’s heads.
