School teacher Nicole Palmer is still trying to get over her husband Mason’s tragic death 10 months after he was killed in a plane crash in the African country of Narumbe when she receives what can only be something from someone playing a hideous joke: a photo of Mason … very much alive. It’s impossible isn’t it? But there’s a message on the back, a cryptic clue that only Nicole and Mason would know about. and she becomes convinced that Mason didn’t die in that plane crash. But then where’s he been for the last 10 months, and why all the secrecy?
From the opening pages, the reader is flung onto a roller-coaster journey of a thrill-ride! Sibel Hodge has created a gripping read with a strong, determined female lead in Nicole. She’s then done a double whammy and given us the fabulous DS Becky Harris, an insightful, empathetic who knows how to look way further than what she sees on the surface and decides that she’s going to investigate the story she’s been presented with, even when her boss has decided it’s a load of hogwash!
And then … Hodge proves herself even further by truly shining in the research department. The depths to which she’s obviously gone to, to seek out whatever she can about how the darkest elements of corruption are taking place in so many countries on the African continent are remarkable. She’s then integrated all of that into a cohesive plot and then (so as not to offend … or maybe more likely to avoid a ransom on her head) has cleverly based her action in a fictitious country: Narumbe. That’s all that’s fictitious though – unfortunately, the facts that she’s based her story are sadly all too real, and an astonishing, shocking eye-opener … oh, and you may never look a chocolate in the eye quite the same, once you’ve finished this!
The Disappeared is a must-read. Not only because it’s well-written, but because it imparts vital knowledge to so many of us who would otherwise remain oblivious to the injustices that are being carried out in parts of the world that lie outside of our supposedly safe cocoons, but which actually affect us far more than we realise.
5 well earned stars to you Sibel Hodge!
